It is not only Tokyo that has its fair share of themed cafes. There are plenty in Hong Kong and whilst they range from the sublime to the ridiculous, you can be sure to have a whole lot of fun. So, let’s take a look where you can enjoy more than just a sweet treat.
As you may or may not have guessed, this cafe has a Harry Potter theme. If you or someone you know has a wizarding fetish, then this is the place to go. The cafe has based itself on a drinking place you could imagine to find in Diagon Alley, and has plenty of broomsticks, spell books and even a sorting hat. The food is named after Harry Potter characters, events and the books themselves. You can also have a photograph taken with the obligatory glasses and a wand.
This is the kind of place that you see pop up frequently on Instagram. All of the food items, which are largely dim sum based, are extremely cute and come in a variety of colors and shapes. The best dishes to order are the char siu bao buns, shaped like pigs and the custard tarts which have a mouth and eyes. You can order meals here too, which will be equally adorable. Don’t worry about the need to squish and squash your food. This is the entire point and is extremely welcome.
Falling in line with the typically Asian obsession with Moomins, the Moomin Cafe is a must see. The food is Scandinavian in nature and is dessert heavy, but you can enjoy some delicious drinks, such as themed lattes and cappucinos. The characters are often in the store, providing the perfect photo opportunity. Plus, there is a huge souvenir shop next door where you can buy some interesting merchandise, exclusive to the store.
You may have visited a cat cafe once or twice, but this time, you can go one step further and visit a dog cafe. There are five dogs to make your acquaintance, and you are welcome to bring your own animals too. Snacks are served for both you and your pet, and you may find that one hour is not enough as you get lost in a horde of wagging tails and fluffy ears. Watch out for the cat that also lives here, a rescue who is as much a part of the doggy family as the pups themselves.
You are never far from a Hello Kitty themed restaurant or cafe in Asia and Hong Kong is no exception. All of the food is Hello Kitty themed, from sweet treats to savoury snacks and the cafe itself is styled like a garden. There are plenty of plants and flowers, as well as Hello Kitty memorabilia everywhere. The coffees here are delicious, but the dim sum also comes highly recommended, as well as being exceptionally cute.
